If you have ever seen a vaporiser in a documentary, a clinic waiting room, or a cannabis research paper, it was probably a Volcano. Storz & Bickel launched the original Volcano in 2000, and the design — a conical metal body with a balloon attachment — has barely changed in twenty-five years. That is not stagnation. It is a statement.
The Volcano Hybrid, released in 2019, kept everything that worked and added a tube whip for direct draw, Bluetooth app control, and a heat-up time so fast it is difficult to believe until you see it. At £500–550, it is the most expensive device on this site. Here is whether it earns that price.
What is the Volcano Hybrid?
The Volcano Hybrid is a desktop vaporiser — it plugs into the wall and stays on your desk, side table, or bedside. Unlike portables, it has no battery to manage, no charge cycles to monitor, and no thermal throttling to preserve battery life. It runs on mains power, heats up in roughly 40 seconds, and holds temperature indefinitely.
It offers two inhalation methods: the classic EASY VALVE balloon system and a tube whip for direct draw. The balloon fills with dense vapour that you detach and inhale from at your own pace — no draw technique required, no resistance. The whip is more traditional: inhale directly through a silicone tube, like a hookah.
The heating system is a patented double-helix heat exchanger that pre-heats air before it passes through the herb. It is hybrid convection-conduction, like the Mighty+, but the desktop form factor eliminates every compromise that portables have to make.
Why it matters for medical cannabis patients
Balloon delivery removes draw technique. Many patients — particularly those with respiratory conditions, muscle weakness, or coordination issues — struggle with the draw resistance and breath control that portables require. The Volcano balloon eliminates this entirely. The machine fills the balloon; you inhale from the balloon. There is no draw technique to learn, no resistance to overcome, and no risk of inhaling too hard and cooling the heater.
Unlimited sessions. Because it plugs into the wall, you never run out of battery. For patients who medicate frequently — chronic pain, multiple daily doses, palliative care — this is not a convenience. It is the difference between a device that works whenever you need it and one that fails at the wrong moment.
Precise, stable temperature. Like the Mighty+, the Volcano Hybrid offers single-degree adjustment from 40°C to 230°C via a touch display. Unlike the Mighty+, it holds that temperature indefinitely. If you need to medicate at exactly 195°C for terpene-specific effects, the Volcano will sit at 195°C all evening without drifting.
Clinic and research acceptance. The Volcano is the most-studied vaporiser in cannabis research. When clinical trials reference "vaporised cannabis," they are usually referencing a Volcano. For a patient who wants the device that the evidence base was built on, this is it.

The filling chamber is notably larger than the Mighty+ (0.5g versus 0.25g). This makes sense for a desktop device — sessions tend to be longer, and the balloon format benefits from a larger fill. If you want smaller doses, Storz & Bickel sell a dosing capsule adapter that lets you use the same capsules as the Mighty+ and Crafty+.
Balloon vs. whip: which should you use?
The balloon is the Volcano's signature feature and the reason it costs £500. The machine fills a food-grade plastic balloon with dense, cool vapour in about 30 seconds. You detach the balloon, attach a mouthpiece, and inhale at your own pace. The vapour stays fresh in the balloon for about 5–10 minutes before it begins to condense.
The whip is a silicone tube that attaches directly to the filling chamber. You inhale through the tube whilst the device is running — it is more like a traditional vaporiser experience, with adjustable airflow up to 30 litres per minute.
For medical use, the balloon has two clear advantages. First, it eliminates draw resistance entirely — the device does the work. Second, it lets you separate dosing from inhaling: fill the balloon at your bedside, then inhale from it at your own pace without the machine running next to you. For a patient with mobility limitations, this is significant.
What it does well
Vapour quality. This is the best vapour Storz & Bickel produce, and by extension among the best vapour available from any consumer vaporiser. The double-helix heat exchanger saturates the air with heat before it reaches the herb, producing vapour that is dense, cool, and consistent from the first balloon to the last.
Speed. Forty seconds from cold to ready. For a device that heats a 0.5g chamber, this is remarkable. The original Volcano took several minutes. The Hybrid does it in less than a minute.
Balloon convenience. Pre-fill a balloon and keep it on your bedside table. No device to hold, no button to press, no technique to manage. Just inhale. For patients managing pain flares or night-time dosing, this is genuinely useful in a way that technical spec sheets do not capture.
Build quality. The Volcano is manufactured in Germany to medical device standards. The body is metal. The switches and display are robust. These devices routinely last a decade or more. Amortised over that lifespan, the price looks different.
What it does not do well
It is not portable. This is obvious but worth stating: the Volcano lives where you plug it in. It weighs nearly two kilograms and requires mains power. If you need a device you can take to work, carry in a bag, or use in multiple rooms without moving the unit, stop reading and buy a Mighty+ instead.
It is loud. The air pump that fills the balloons produces a noticeable hum. It is not disruptive — roughly the volume of a desk fan — but it is not silent. If you need to medicate discreetly whilst others are sleeping in the same room, this matters.
Balloon crinkle. The EASY VALVE balloons are food-grade plastic and make a crinkling sound when handled. Some patients find it annoying. Most get used to it. Replacement balloons are cheap (£5–10 for a set), but you will need them — the plastic degrades after a few weeks of regular use.
Chamber size. The 0.5g chamber is larger than most patients need for a single session. You can partially fill it — the Volcano handles partial loads fine — but it is designed for sessions, not microdosing. The dosing capsule adapter solves this, but it is an additional purchase.
Price. £500–550. This is the most expensive vaporiser we review. It is worth it for the right patient. It is not worth it if you only medicate occasionally or need portability.
Who it is for
The Volcano Hybrid is for the patient who medicates primarily at home, values vapour quality above all else, and wants a device that will last a decade. It is the right choice for chronic pain patients who dose frequently throughout the day, for patients with respiratory or mobility limitations who benefit from the balloon system, and for anyone who wants the device that the medical cannabis evidence base was built on.
It is not for the patient who needs portability, the patient on a budget, or the patient who medicates infrequently enough that a £300 portable would serve them just as well.
Verdict
The Volcano Hybrid is expensive, immobile, and slightly noisy. It is also the best vapour you can get outside of a laboratory. If you medicate at home and you want one device that will outlast every portable you will ever own, this is it.
