The evidence base for CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders continues to strengthen. Several new clinical trials published in the first half of 2026 have provided valuable data on efficacy, dosing, and safety profiles.
What the trials found
A randomised controlled trial involving 150 patients with generalised anxiety disorder found that daily CBD administration resulted in significant reductions in anxiety scores compared to placebo, with effects becoming apparent after four weeks of treatment. Importantly, side effects were mild and tolerability was high.
Dosing matters
One of the key findings across multiple trials is that dosing is critical. Too low a dose appears to have minimal effect, while very high doses can increase side effects without additional benefit. The therapeutic window appears to be in the range of 300-600mg daily, though individual variation is significant.
What's next
Larger phase III trials are now being planned, and researchers are increasingly interested in how CBD compares to existing first-line treatments for anxiety. The coming 12-18 months should provide much clearer guidance for clinicians considering CBD as a treatment option.
